Main topic in the activities of Minu Balkanski Foundation and National Institute of Education (NIE) is Moral, Ethic and Civic Education. We do believe that academic schooling is not enough to form the authentic, dignified citizen. Bulgarian children should be educated. They will have to live in society; they should know how to distinguish right from wrong. They should be taught how to behave in a civilized society.
To fulfill those goals NIE aims at initiating a national debate and bring Moral, Ethics and Civic Education as a regular subject of study in Bulgarian schools. Well-known university lecturers are engaged in writing booklets and manuals and preparing courses to be held in NIE.
During the year in NIE, Oriahovitza village, various informatics courses are offered. They are designed for IT teachers (Java programming and Visual Basic 6.0), but there are also introductory courses for teachers in different fields, most recently: how to use IT to teach geography, history etc. During the first half of 2007 more than 150 experts have participated in IT courses, organized in NIE to increase their professional experience.
